Understanding how the properties of metals and alloys are determined by their structure and composition enables the design of alloys with properties tailored to their use. The SEP booklet 'Metals and Smart Alloys' contains two sections of student activities. The first section is concerned with 'conventional' alloys, in particular, looking at iron and steel, and at elastic and plastic deformation. The second section looks at the new generation of 'smart alloys' or 'shape memory alloys', and at how they are now being used in a variety of applications.
